  16.    DXF directly to Lightwave has never worked very well for me. The before
  17. exporting from AutoCAD to DXF, the objects have to be broken up into
  18. blocks, or something like that. A detailed explanation is in the LW manual.
  19.    Even following the instructions, what comes in is usually very
  20. unsatisfactory for the files *we're* working with [your actual milage may
  21. vary]. We were dealing with very complex shapes [twisted airfoils -- things
  22. similar to propellers] nearly a thousand polygons.
  23.    HOWEVER, there is hope, but you need Autodesk 3D Studio to perform the
  24. correct magic. We took the AutoCAD objects and brought them into 3D Studio
  25. [I don't remember the details; it was two years ago. I seem to remember
  26. something about saving out slides from AutoCAD]. From 3D Studio we saved
  27. them out as 3D Studio files.
  28.    The 3D Studio files import very well into LW. There are odd changes,
  29. however. Some complex polygons get changed into many-many triangles. I've
  30. brought the objects into Modeller and combined polygons to make objects
  31. more managable.
  32.    Yeah, yeah, I know buying a $3,000 MS-DOS package to act as a
  33. pass-through from AutoCAD to LW is expensive. In our case, govt. footed the
  34. bill and we thought 3D Studio would give us LW-like capabilities on an
  35. MS-DOS machine [it does if you buy thousands and thousands of $ of
  36. equipment, like TARGA boards and VideoVGA boards].
  37.    There may be a cheaper alternative out there, like Interchange Plus, or
  38. something in the public domain.
